CHAPTER 15

As Javi drove, he tapped his fingers along to a song Lola vaguely recognized as señora music, the kind her mother often listened to as she cleaned. After days of listening to the artists Tommy favored when he played passenger-seat DJ—both Mari and Paty shared her brother’s taste in music—the throwback took her momentarily by surprise. But it was the next song that floored her.

“Y ahora . . .” the over-enunciating voice of the radio host said through a slight crackle of connectivity, “Aerosmith.”

Lola laughed out loud as the sweeping chords of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” began filling the car. Javi drummed the beat on the steering wheel.

“¿Qué?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her laughter.

Lola looked at him sideways. “Aerosmith? Really?”

He shrugged. “The American songs stay around for a while sometimes. We love a classic.”

Dramatically, he turned the volume up right as Steven Tyler hit the anguished chorus, and sang along with the same effort he had given the ranchera performance in the La Rosa kitchen. Except this time, he had an audience. And while Lola was too aware of herself to join in, she hummed along.
